I didn’t sit down and figure any of it out. Each one showed up in the middle of something else. A room I kept rearranging because I couldn’t name what was actually wrong with it. A friend who showed up on an ordinary Tuesday when nobody else did. A person I was certain had it all together who absolutely did not.

I think we want the lesson to arrive separately from the hard part so we can keep the useful bit and skip the rest. It doesn’t work that way. They’re the same thing.

Starting over isn’t the same as starting behind. That’s the one that took me the longest to believe.

For years I only shared the finished version of all of this. The rooms, the shows, the before and afters. I love that work and it has never been the whole story.
